Nine people, including eight corrections officers and one inmate, were hospitalized following a violent riot involving approximately 200 inmates at Ironwood State Prison in Blythe, Southern California. The incident took place on Wednesday morning during a routine contraband investigation.
The Unfolding Chaos
According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, the violence erupted as officers were escorting an inmate across the recreational yard. The inmate suddenly headbutted a staff member, triggering a chaotic response from the other incarcerated individuals present. Around 200 inmates rushed towards the officers, launching a brutal attack with fists and rocks.
In an attempt to regain control, the officers fired a rifle warning round before resorting to the use of “chemical agents and non-lethal impact rounds.” These measures were successful in subduing the riot, but not before leaving several injured.
Injuries and Investigations
Following the incident, eight staff members and one inmate were transported to an outside hospital for treatment. Although the extent of their injuries remains undisclosed, they were later discharged and returned to the prison. Authorities have identified 30 inmates as directly involved in the riot, and an ongoing investigation is underway to determine the causes and consequences of the violent outbreak.
Security Measures Implemented
As a precautionary measure, movement in the yards and dayrooms of all prisons statewide has been restricted for 24 hours. This temporary lockdown will allow officials to conduct a comprehensive threat assessment and ensure the safety of both staff and inmates.
