Jammu Tawi, February 01 (Gurshan):
Youth Dies in Police Custody Under Suspicious Circumstances
A shocking incident has unfolded in the city of Jammu, where a young man has died while in police custody. The news of this tragic death came to light when the police officials transported the body of the deceased to the Government Medical College Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
The victim, identified as Sahil Saini, a 22-year-old resident of Kasba Nagri in the Kathua district, was apprehended by the police on charges of theft from the Guru Nanak Nagar area.
Family Accuses Police of Brutal Torture
The family members of the deceased have accused the police of subjecting Sahil to brutal torture while in custody. They are demanding strict action against all the police personnel involved in this incident, alleging that their son was mercilessly beaten.
Investigation Launched into Custodial Death
In response to the outcry, an executive magisterial inquiry has been ordered to investigate the circumstances surrounding Sahil’s death in police custody. The district administration has instructed the magistrate to thoroughly examine this case of custodial death.
Details of the Incident
According to the police, Sahil was arrested on suspicion immediately after a complaint of theft at a mobile shop in Nanak Nagar. During the subsequent interrogation, the police claim that Sahil not only confessed to the theft at the mobile shop but also revealed his involvement in numerous other thefts that occurred in Jammu.
However, late last night, Sahil’s health suddenly deteriorated, prompting the personnel at Gandhinagar police station to rush him to GMC Hospital in Jammu. Unfortunately, the doctors declared him brought-dead upon arrival.
Family’s Allegations and Police Response
Sahil’s family members have vehemently denied the police’s claim that he committed suicide by hanging himself inside the police station. They insist that Sahil could not have taken his own life and instead allege that he died due to the brutality of the police, expressing concern over the visible injuries on his body.
The police, on the other hand, have stated that Gandhinagar police station is equipped with CCTV cameras, which will provide crucial evidence to determine the exact cause of Sahil’s death. They assure that an investigation will be conducted, and the post-mortem report will shed more light on the matter.
This incident has sparked widespread outrage, and Sahil’s parents are demanding a judicial probe into the case, expressing their lack of confidence in an investigation by an executive magistrate.
